Over a 2 kilometre stretch of beach lies the town of Platja d’Aro, on a section of coastline that spans from Palamós to Sant Feliu de Guíxols. What was originally a small fishing village is now one of the most important tourist destinations in the province of Girona, which means that in summer it has a population of around 100,000 inhabitants, while in winter and the low season, only 19,000 people live here.
With this many people in summer it’s not surprising that Platja d’Aro’s seafront promenade is one of the main avenues of the town, with the most shops, bars, restaurants, etc., all there to be enjoyed in the summertime.
But if you’re looking for a bit more tranquillity, this town does have some lovely quiet spots too. We recommend that you head north, beyond the seafront promenade, to an area where you’ll find some beautiful coves. The best option is to walk along the ‘camins de ronda’ (walking trails that go along the shoreline on the Costa Brava), because the views they afford are truly beautiful and you’ll discover some stunning spots.
One of the best coves is Cala de Cap Roig, which is completely free of light pollution, so at night you can gaze up at the Milky Way in all its glory. It’s the perfect spot for astronomy enthusiasts, romantic evenings or unforgettable moments with the family or friends.
If you like quirky museums, we recommend a visit to the unusual doll museum, the Museo de la Muñeca, which is housed in a lovely building in the old town centre. It was officially opened in 1997 and contains an extensive collection of dolls of different styles and from different eras that children and nostalgics will love.
